In a disused elementary school in Seattle's south end, a vision is taking shape that will provide vital opportunities for STEM learning as well as job skills including CAD, CAM, welding, electrical, and machining.
Based in the old Beverly Park elementary school, the Highline Robotics Alliance is a resource for 4-H affiliated Highline Public Schools FIRST Robotics teams needing design, machine shop, and practice spaces.
HRA will eventually expand to become a STEM activity center serving the community at large.
Why HRA Matters
The positive impact on FIRST Robotics Competition participants is gratifying and well documented. Over 88% have more interest in doing well in school and 92% are more interested in attending college.
Just as importantly, the CAD, CAM, welding, electrical and machining skills gained while making a robot are badly needed by local manufacturers and can be the basis of excellent careers for students who may not see college as their path.
The Highline Robotics Alliance is situated in one of the Seattle area's most diverse neighborhoods, and the creation of a community STEM center will fill an important opportunity gap for local residents.
Progress
First steps: Skunk Works Robotics FRC Team 1983 has already created a practice field at HRA, now we need to assemble a minimal working machine shop for use in the 2019-2020 FRC season.
